Counseling

No matter where you are on your journey, there are times when a little help can go a long way toward achieving your goals.

The EAP provides short-term, issue-based counseling* through a national network of licensed, trained professionals. Sessions typically last one hour and can be conducted in-person, over the phone, or virtually, depending on your agency's benefits.

Services provided through this program are:

  • No cost to you and your household members
  • Voluntary and confidential, and are not reported to your employer or maintained in a personnel file**
  • Subject to variations in delivery method and level of access, depending on what your agency has procured through FOH

Counseling sessions are allocated on a per-issue, per-year basis, and the number of sessions varies by agency. Check with your benefits coordinator to confirm, or call 800-222-0364 for immediate assistance.

Meet with an FOH Field Consultant

Field Consultants are highly trained, licensed professionals who are familiar with your agency's culture and specialize in working with federal employees and their family members. Many federal agencies offer on-site counseling, providing convenient access to professional support at your workplace or in a nearby federal building. If you have a mental health emergency, please call 800-222-0364 or 911.

  • Availability and scheduling vary by agency and location
Not all federal agencies allow outside employees to access the building, so please check the listings below for more information.
  • Counselors cannot provide services in states where they are not licensed
To access in-person or telehealth services, members must work or reside in the state where the FOH Field Consultant is licensed.

TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT: Click the name of a counselor in the state where you live or work. Be sure to select your time zone before scheduling, as all appointment times default to Eastern Time.

*Short-term counseling is not appropriate for all situations. If you are in crisis or having suicidal thoughts, seek help immediately. Call or text 988 (the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), dial 911, or go to your nearest emergency room.

**Counseling through your program is voluntary and confidential. It is not reported to your employer or included in your personnel file. However, there are exceptions. Information may be shared if you are required to meet with a counselor as a condition of employment (a mandatory referral) or if you have consented to share it. In some situations, your program is legally obligated to report certain concerns, such as child or elder abuse or threats of self-harm or harm to others.
